Great Wall of China - Mutianyu Section
Walk on the Wonder of the World
The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is widely considered the best place near Beijing to experience this ancient wonder. Built in 1368 during the Ming Dynasty on the foundations of an earlier Northern Qi wall (550 AD), Mutianyu stretches 5.4 kilometers along dramatic mountain ridges. With 23 watchtowers, lush forest surroundings, and modern amenities including cable cars and a toboggan slide, it offers an ideal balance of historical authenticity, natural beauty, and visitor comfort. Unlike the crowded Badaling section, Mutianyu provides a more serene and authentic Great Wall experience while still being easily accessible from Beijing (70 km, 1.5-2 hours drive).
Part of the Great Wall system recognized in 1987
Panoramic vistas of forested mountains and dramatic ridgelines
Easy access via cable car, fun toboggan slide descent option
Fewer tourists than Badaling, more authentic experience
Most complete restoration, original Ming dynasty architecture
From Ancient Defense to World Wonder
The Mutianyu Great Wall was first built during the Northern Qi Dynasty (550 AD) as a strategic defense outpost protecting Beijing from northern invasions. The current structure was rebuilt and reinforced during the Ming Dynasty in 1368 under the supervision of General Xu Da. Mutianyu served as a crucial military fortress defending the capital due to its strategic position guarding the northern pass to Beijing. The wall here features unique defensive architecture including battlements on both sides (rare on the Great Wall), three watchtowers on one platform, and dense watchtower spacing for enhanced defense. After centuries of abandonment and decay, Mutianyu was the first Great Wall section to be restored and opened to tourists in 1986, setting the standard for Great Wall preservation.
Military Architecture & Strategic Defense
Mutianyu showcases the pinnacle of Ming dynasty military engineering. The wall here features unique architectural elements not found elsewhere: battlements (crenellated walls) on both sides rather than just one, allowing defenders to fight enemies from either direction. The watchtowers are densely spaced (averaging one every 100 meters) and larger than other sections, some with three watchtowers built on a single platform—a rare design providing 360-degree defensive coverage. The wall follows the natural mountain ridges, creating a formidable barrier that's nearly impossible to scale. These features reflect Mutianyu's critical role as the northern gateway to Beijing, requiring the strongest possible defenses.
Restored Magnificence
The Mutianyu section stretches 5.4 km with 23 watchtowers, though only about 2.5 km is open to visitors. The restored wall is 7-8 meters high and 4-5 meters wide, with original Ming dynasty bricks and granite. The section features dramatic elevation changes, climbing steep mountain slopes with stunning panoramic views of forested mountains. Modern amenities make it accessible: a cable car carries visitors to Tower 14, a chairlift goes to Tower 6, and a thrilling toboggan slide provides a fun descent. The wall is surrounded by dense forest, creating spectacular scenery in all seasons—green in summer, golden in autumn, and snow-covered in winter.

Don't miss these highlights during your visit
Tower 14 (Cable Car Station)
The main cable car drops you at Tower 14, the central and most popular starting point. From here, you can hike east toward Tower 20 (steeper, fewer crowds, best views) or west toward Tower 6 (easier, more tourists). Tower 14 itself offers excellent panoramic views and photo opportunities.
Eastern Section (Towers 14-23)
The eastern route from Tower 14 to Tower 20 is steeper but more rewarding with spectacular mountain views and fewer crowds. This section features dramatic elevation changes, authentic steep steps, and pristine restoration. Tower 20 marks the highest point accessible to visitors with 360-degree mountain vistas. The challenging climb makes it less crowded and perfect for photography.
Western Section (Towers 6-14)
The western route from Tower 14 to Tower 6 is gentler and more popular with families and tour groups. This section still offers excellent Great Wall experience with well-preserved battlements, watchtowers, and mountain views, but with easier slopes. Tower 6 connects to the chairlift station.
Toboggan Slide Descent
A unique and thrilling way to descend from the Great Wall! This metal toboggan slide winds down the mountain from near the cable car station to the base. You control your speed with a hand brake while enjoying mountain views. It's a favorite with visitors of all ages and saves tired legs after climbing the wall. The ride takes about 5-7 minutes.
